Spotlight on new Quebecois and Canadian cinema
QUéBEC/CANADA | 80 minutes | 2015
In 2010, in Vancouver, American actor Randy Quaid (Kingpin, Independence Day) and his wife, Evi, drew national media attention when they requested refugee status in Canada, claiming that influential figures in Hollywood were plotting against them to steal everything from them. And there was more: they claimed their life was in danger, like those of other American actors who, they alleged, had died at the hands of the mysterious “Hollywood Star Whackers” including Heath Ledger, David Carradine and Chris Penn. After their application for asylum was denied, Randy and Evi Quaid then disappeared without a trace. Showing a theatrical flair, the couple came up for air early in 2015, releasing Web videos from an apartment in Montreal. Mathieu Grondin compiled the clips — alternating between fringe political commentary, accusations against alleged conspirators and outright porn (shown here in all its glory). The result is a perplexing whole of uneven dimensions. Are Randy and Evi suffering from persecution… or have they completely lost their minds? You decide.
