An exploration of experimental and multidisciplinary forms of cinema
QUéBEC/CANADA | 300 minutes | 2015
A major work from filmmaker and multimedia artist Richard Kerr, Demi Monde presents a fresco of images that decompose, reform and dissolve into one another at an almost imperceptibly slow pace. For source material, Kerr has drawn from an archive of Hollywood films that were destined for the dump. He digitized them in a series of long dissolving sequences and constructed a slideshow for a dual projector holding 160 handmade 35mm images. The effect is a living poster undergoing constant metamorphosis that amalgamates into a hypnotic abstract dance between abstraction and tangible imagery. Apparitions akin to exhumations appear before our eyes, then imperceptibly escape us and melt away. The result is a captivating celebration of film, cinema and life. Kerr has explored a multitude of genres and media since the ’70s. In the mid-’90s, he expanded his œuvre to include meta-film and installation.
