The wild bunch, bold cinematic rebels and adventurous films
GERMANY | 67 minutes | 2015
CANADIAN PREMIERE / THE BAND FENSTER WILL BE PRESENTTrue story! While recording their third album, with much difficulty, a band mysteriously disappears. They are trapped in a parallel dimension, an absurd psychotropic universe where nothing makes any sense at all. To find their way back to their “reality”, they will have to bring some order to the chaos. Unless it’s our “reality” that’s the real problem.A year of pre-production, two VHS cameras, a drone, 66 blank tapes, 2,831 kilometres of tape, hundreds of actors, 20 filming locations and 8 eggplants: all this went into this musical movie by the German cult band Fenster, who did almost everything themselves. A dash of Jodorowsky-style epic science fiction experimentation, a bit of hallucinogen-fuelled concert movie, and a touch of rebellious pop happening à la Harmony Korine, Emocean is a deeply strange first film that has big ambitions, even though it may not look like it at first. It is conceived as the continuation of one of the band’s psychedelic pop albums, and it just premiered at Berlin’s legendary nightclub, Berghain. Next stop: deconstructing reality in Montreal.
