New cinema for children young and old
FINLAND | 80 minutes | 2014
The Moomins leave their peaceful valley to visit the Riviera, where Snorkmaiden is courted by a rich lothario, much to Moomin’s consternation. This animated film was made in celebration of the centenary of Finnish author Tove Jansson, the creator of the Moomins, who brought the characters to life in children’s books and comics from 1945 to 1993. Adored the world over, the characters have appeared in several film and television adaptations in Japan, Germany, Finland and other countries. To stay faithful to the aesthetic of the original comics, Moomins on the Riviera was hand-drawn, resulting in a colourful retro look, while the action takes places in a world inspired by 50s posters of the French Riviera. The film’s funny, poetic plot, gently satirizing the rich and famous, is a touching but not sappy family story of love and acceptance. An intelligent entertainment for kids that adults can also enjoy
