The big names in cinema and this year’s most talked-about films
CANADA, Germany | 95 minutes | 2015
The events occurred nearly 70 years ago, but they remain all too fresh for Zev, a Holocaust survivor now living in a retirement home and slowly losing his memory. The former Nazi guard who murdered his family is living under an assumed name in the United States, but he is still very much in Zev’s line of sight. He is determined to have his revenge, no matter what he has to go through to get to his target. Screened in competition at this year’s Venice Film Festival and at TIFF, Remember reopens one of the darkest chapters in world history in a bold and original way, thanks to the keen eye of Atom Egoyan (The Captive, Devil’s Knot). Uncharacteristically for Egoyan, the film is based on a script by newcomer Benjamin August. This tense and morally ambiguous thriller stars Martin Landau, Dean Norris and Bruno Ganz alongside the great Christopher Plummer, who appeared in Egoyan’s Ararat, and who has found a meaty and complex role fit for his incomparable talent.
