The big names in cinema and this year’s most talked-about films
IRELAND, Canada | 118 minutes | 2015
Ma (Brie Larson) and Jack (Jacob Tremblay), her 5-year-old son, live completely isolated in a small closed room they call, simply, Room. Kidnapped as a teen, the young mother remembers a little bit about life outside the four walls, before Old Nick (Sean Bridgers), Jack’s father, captured her. The child has never known any life outside of captivity. He has absolutely no concept of the outside world, because he was born in the tiny prison. When mother and son finally escape, an amazing and suspenseful story of survival and endurance begins. Told through the little boy’s eyes, the discovery of the world — at its most terrifying and most beautiful — takes on unexpected depth. The latest film from Irish director Lenny Abrahamson, whose previous works include the award-winning feature Frank, Room explores a mother’s intense love for her son. Written by Emma Donoghue — the novelist who wrote the 2010 bestseller on which the film is based — Room also includes fine performances by William H. Macy and Joan Allen.
