An exploration of experimental and multidisciplinary forms of cinema
CANADA | 300 minutes | 2015
Showing in the Phi Centre’s second-floor exhibition space, this cinematic installation consists of footage loops from the film’s principal photography sessions. Beautiful, abstract and ectoplasmic, these atmospheric visual projections feature actors who move, stretch and seemingly torture and pleasure themselves in a silent void; a paranormal afterlife, explains the film’s director Guy Maddin. Co-directed by Evan Johnson, The Forbidden Room tells interconnected tales of a submarine crew, feared pack of forest bandits famous surgeon, and battalion of child soldiers who all get more than they bargained for as they wend their way toward progressive ideas on life and love. As an interactive, multi-platform project, The Forbidden Room also includes short films, a website, and an installation component that invited the public to be part of the filming sessions, some of which took place at the Phi Centre and others at Centre Pompidou in Paris. The movie opens at the Phi Centre and Cinéma du Parc on October 23.From Oct 10 to Nov 7, following the PHI Centre schedule. (Details on centre-phi.com)
