A contrasting view of new world cinema
CANADA, Brazil | 96 minutes | 2015
Emma, a cartoonist, has a day job in a factory that makes sex dolls. With the money she’s saved, she plans on having cosmetic surgery. In her free time, she works on a comic book about a self-absorbed filmmaker named Edward. For his latest work, Edward is determined to deliver something more artistically ambitious so that he’ll stop being pigeonholed as an action movie director, a label he hates. His plot centres on Michelle, a Brazilian model who’s left the fashion world to write her first novel about... a cartoonist named Emma. Former apprentice to Fernando Meirelles (Blindness), Brazilian director Pedro Morelli presents a kaleidoscopic feature whose characters tell each other’s stories. Backed by the very first film score from Kid Koala, this cheeky, no-holdsbarred comedy skilfully blends animation with live action to underscore the superb performances of a talented lineup headed by Mexican actor Gael García Bernal. Zoom, which made its world premiere at this year’s TIFF, is a visually exhilarating romp through a deliciously twisted storyline.
